Busy lives mean convenience becomes more attractive. For example, convenience stores, whether attached to gas stations or wedged between urban housing, still flourish in spite of high pricing compared to supermarkets.
What is new is that these small stores—whether called WaWa or Spar—are ramping up the food offerings. The potato chips and donuts still sell, but other more healthful options are available too.
Say you’re taking a break from a long drive or only have a few minutes to grab lunch, what to buy?
Let’s make the hunt more challenging: which quick foods will give me a probiotic pop?
Here are some ideas on navigating through the junk food:
The fruit basket up front:
Grab the lone banana for a shot of prebiotic food for your good bacteria.
The refrigerator/freezer:
Find the buttermilk, kefir drinks, and kombucha.
Many now sell yogurt with spoons attached.
Aged cheeses
Add a bag of nuts or seeds to the above and a probiotic-rich lunch or snack will be possible.
If you land in a big city such as London or Los Angeles, convenience stores may offer kimchi, sourdough breads or other probiotic palate pleasers. Your odds go up if you seek out ethnic neighborhoods with new immigrants. But then, the journey won’t be so convenient, but it should be fun as well as delicious.
