A three-day webinar Microbiome: Mastering the Market provided by Naturally Informed on May 17-19, 2022 offered an exciting slate of topics. One session on communications was recapped by IPA in an earlier blog. The following explored the latest news distilled from the retail marketplace.
In Microbiome Market Trends, Scott Dicker, Senior Market Insights Analyst, SPINS, and Dan Harari, VP Business Development, ClearCut Analytic shared their proprietary research. In this data-rich presentation, the audience heard about their observations from the last 52 weeks ending April 17, 2022.
As expected, digestive health took the lion’s share of the market with $130 million spent on products (including foods and all supplements) in the past year. But it was noted that while prebiotics and probiotics are best known for their usage in gut health, other health focuses include cold & flu and mood support and incorporating these ingredients for added benefits in their supplements.
Several trends were touched on by the presenters:
- Apple cider vinegar as beverages and shots are popular, aiming to position itself in the fermented beverage category.
- Yogurt continues to lead in fermentation, with nut milks showing growth in the burgeoning plant-based category.
- Functional beverages with probiotics showed modest growth.
- Probiotic supplements showed 18% year-over-year growth
The slides accompanying the talk cited the top five probiotic supplements by brand name and category. Also highlighted were the innovations in flavor that are driving growth in the probiotic and prebiotic sector (hint: honey is a crowd-pleaser).
In addition, data on sales trends in fiber supplements, digestive enzymes, and fermented food products were disclosed in the webinar.
