Blood sugar levels can take a beating during pregnancy.
The stress of incubating a new human is considerable. While recent studies show probiotics may help with control for normal weight pregnant women, little is known how probiotics may affect obese pregnant women.
Researchers at the National Maternity Hospital, Dublin, Ireland recruited 175 pregnant women with an early pregnancy body mass index (BMI) from 30.0 to 39.9.
Women received either a daily probiotic or a placebo capsule from 24 to 28 weeks of pregnancy.
Results:
- Fasting glucoses: no significant differences between groups
- Impaired blood sugar levels: no significant difference (16% in the probiotic group vs. 15% placebo)
- Birth weights: no significant differences.
